36 Personal Finance Resources to Make You a Smart Investor

by Radhey Sharma

Best Personal Finance Blogs, Best Personal Finance Magazins, Best Personal Finance Newspaper, investing tips, Personal Finance Blog, Personal Finance Calculators, Personal Finance Magazines, Personal Finance Newspaper

If you are scouring for personal finance resources or guides to learn about financial planning in India, go no further. We bring to you the complete list that will make you walk and eventually run ! Personally, the personal finance landscape is changing so fast in India that I am amazed at what one wants to keep his or her eyes on.

But that’s the fun in life – keep catching up or be abreast of the latest happenings and that is how you can learn. So let me jump straight away into the complete list. Note that I had done the The Ultimate Listing of Personal Finance Learning Sites last year but a lot of them have not become defunct so the below will help everyone.

If you think there are some personal finance resources out there which I have missed, please add it to the comments section and I will update the article.

Personal Finance Resources – Best Magazines

1. Outlook Money – If you haven’t subscribed to this yet, you are missing participating in the treasure hunt which scores of other readers have already joined. While the fortnightly issue is here, the digital weekly version has enough to keep you busy for an hour over the weekend. Now you know where my Sunday goes ! At a 1 year subscription of Rs 599, 2 years at Rs 999 and 3 years at Rs 1399, it would be a shame not to have this in your kitty.
2. Economic Times Wealth – Just a year old into circulation, Economic Times Wealth is, in my opinion, giving a tough competition to Outlook Money. I like the presentation and articles that come out each Monday. If you are missing on the hard copy, read all articles online.

3. Money Today – Once a monthly bundle of absolute joy is what I call Money Today. The 1 year subscription is for Rs 500 and 3 year is for Rs 1500. Not to be missed.
4. Money Life – This personal finance resource is different in the sense that it takes most of the awareness issues for the investors head on with regulators. “Know Whats Coming” is it’s tag line. Is it yours as well ?

Best Articles on Personal Finance Resources

5. Business Today Money – Basic and advanced articles from Business Today house. Top notch.
6. Rediff Business Personal Finance – A plethora of articles from Rediff. Go check the archives as well.
7. Rediff GetAhead Personal Finance – Basic and advanced articles for beginners. Don’t miss the archives.
8. Yahoo Finance – Coming from the Yahoo stable (never mind their top management reshuffle every now and then), this is top class.
9. Economic Times Personal Finance – The Economic Times is probably one of the best dailies on economy and personal finance. Breaking news are a differentiating feature.
10. Indian Express Money – Articles here are both basic and advanced.
11. LiveMint Money – The personal finance and economy authored editorials are very very good.
12. Money Life Personal Finance – As good as the magazine at point no 4 above.

    @Radhey,

    I have bookmarked this article, very useful. You had covered this last year too. I follow most of the Indian blogs and they all have wealth of information, only you need to take out time to read each one of them.

    To be honest, I started my financial planning only after following these blogs. Keep up the good work.

      @Sudip D, LOL Sudip, I did miss it !

      • Sudip D says

        February 2, 2012 at 1:33 pm

        @Radhey Sharma, 😛

        No, seriously. Yours is the first site which I subsribed for articles related to Finanical planning. And your posts are so informative & well explained in common man’s language that I didn’t have to go out looking for other similar blogs to enhance my knowledge.

        Yesterday after going through the above list I visited couple of blogs. Found http://www.tflguide.com the best. Their artciles are professionally written yet they are very precise, educative & in very easy to understand language. So subscirbed to them. 🙂

        Radhey, have you ever thought of promoting your website/blog in order to boost the visitors? There are only 5-10 people who post comments on regular basis, not many new visiors, I guess. Let me know your thoughts.

        • Radhey Sharma says

          February 2, 2012 at 7:36 pm

          @Sudip D, Yeah, that has been bothering me actually. I am doing the promotion and it should increase over a period of time.

          It’s a incremental process and takes time. And then I have wonderful readers like you who can help spread the word.

          • Sudip D says

            February 2, 2012 at 10:19 pm

            @Radhey Sharma, Ok. That’s great.

            I work in a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) & Web development company in Pune. So we would be really glad to help you to market your site in order to increase its online presence. So do let us know if you need our help. You have got my personal email ID I suppose.

            And yes, on a personal level I would definitely spread the word about your posts (rather I have already started doing so). 🙂

      February 9, 2012 at 6:52 pm

      @Rakesh, Thanks Rakesh.

      Some of them missed according to me are:
      – The simple dollar http:\\www.thesimpledollar.com\
      – Ranjan Varma blog http:\\ranjanvarma.com\

      There were many more items that were added in here which I have missed till now.

      • Radhey Sharma says

        February 9, 2012 at 7:22 pm

        @Manickkam, How many do you practically read ?

        • Manickkam says

          February 9, 2012 at 7:34 pm

          @Radhey Sharma, As you have mentioned already, it could be 10-15. This itself mostly gives you redundant information!

          This is applicable to whatever kind of stuff you read.

      • Rakesh says

        February 9, 2012 at 8:19 pm

        @Manickkam,

        I used to follow Ranjan Varma, he used to write good articles. Off late he doesn’t seem to write much. He is busy writing a book.

        Rakesh

          @Rakesh, All of them are writing books !!

  8. Chirag says

    February 5, 2012 at 10:56 am

    It’s so nice to see all good at one place. This is very useful.

    Happy to see this list, though it’s difficult to take time for all of these. I think subscribing Radhey will give benefit of all of these simply :).

  9. Shanil says

    February 9, 2012 at 2:56 pm

    All the sites mentioned above are very good but wealthwisher is the one which I check on a daily basis. I like tflguide and Jagoinvestor also. But Radhey’s narrative style is very simple and is easy to follow.

    Outlook Money and Money Today are the best personal finance magazines available in India right now. If you like the digital version you can subscribe it through Zinio. If you open an account with them they give you a gift card for $25. Using these you should be able to opt for the 1 year subscription of Outlook Money and Money Today free of cost 🙂 — (Disclaimer – I am in no way promoting ZINIO here. I am only trying to help my friends here who can benefit from this offer by Zinio)

    • Radhey Sharma says

      February 9, 2012 at 7:14 pm

      @Shanil, Vow, I did not know that.
      I do read JagoInvestor and TFLGuides and I can say they are good.

      • Rakesh says

        February 9, 2012 at 8:21 pm

        @Radhey,

        Yes, Jagoinvestor is very good. Manish has also written a book which got published last month.

        Rakesh

  10. Vivek K says

    February 10, 2012 at 8:35 pm

    For people who like finance programs on TV can watch Zee Business or CNBC Awaaz at 7:30pm on weekdays. They take questions from investors and have the experts answer them. They have a theme assigned for every day and cover questions from stocks, MFs, insurance, property etc.

    • Radhey Sharma says

      February 11, 2012 at 8:13 am

      @Vivek K, You watch it ?

      • Vivek K says

        February 11, 2012 at 9:09 pm

        @Radhey Sharma, Yes I do watch it, not regularly but on and off. I dont prefer to listen advise on stocks but other areas are pretty decent. One should not blindly follow their advise but can consider their opinions.
        There is famous saying “suno sabki karo apni” 😉

        • Rakesh says

          February 11, 2012 at 9:18 pm

          @Vivek,

          Liked your quote “suno sabki karo apni”

  11. Rakesh says

    February 10, 2012 at 9:39 pm

    My simple advise to those invested in stock market is to don’t follow the guys on TV. Just do your own research and invest. I have seen many times the same guy giving a buy call on a stock and then next week giving a sell call. They are out there to just make money and fool investors. I am in stock market for over 10 years and don’t follow anyone. I just do my own research and invest.
    I won’t comment on financial planning queries…..

    Rakesh

    • Radhey Sharma says

      February 11, 2012 at 8:14 am

      @Rakesh, Doing your own research is good but that is time consuming. At the same time, listening to guys on TV is suicidal.

      But can everyone do their own research ?

  12. Rakesh says

    February 11, 2012 at 8:54 pm

    Radhey,

    Agree its time consuming but everyone cannot do research but they should do since they will be investing their hard-earned money. When we buy a house or LCD we do a lot of research similarly in stocks too we should do.
    But for mutual funds and other investment avenues we have you, wherein you write great articles and advise us on various funds to invest in.

    Rakesh
